ARTIST FOCUS: JED HENRY

This week we have a very special Artist Focus featuring Jed Henry. Not only are we highlighting his art but we are also promoting his Kickstarter that began on August 1.

In less than 24 hours Jed surpassed his $10,000 goal and at the time of writing he was at $76,879 with 26 days to go. There’s still plenty of reasons to keep donating as every dollar they receive goes toward more and more rewards they can offer so be sure to donate.

Tell us about yourself.  Where are you from? Where do you live now?
My name is Jed Henry. I currently live in Utah, though I grew up exclusively in Indiana.

How long have you been designing/illustrating? What got you interested in art?
I was always drawing in class as a kid.  When school ended, I would go home and draw some more. If I wasn’t drawing, I was reading books, watching movies, or playing games with great art. All of those things combined to form my tastes as an artist.

Who/what influences your art? Is there a particular person’s style that has influenced you?
You might not recognize it from my work, but I’ve always loved the art of Yoshitaka Amano. For those who may not know him, he’s been the main designer for the Final Fantasy series since its inception. His sense of line and pattern takes commercial art to an entirely new level, in my opinion.  

How would you describe your style? 
I’m very much a jack-of-all-styles when it comes to illustration. On this particular Ukiyo-E Heroes project, I’m doing my best to adhere to 18th and 19th century Japanese design. For my children’s books, I do completely different styles. You can see how much I bounce around by surfing my blog entries through the years.  

What medium do you typically use when creating art?
I always use about half traditional media, and half digital. I like the visceral nature of real paint, but also the control of Photoshop.

What is your approach when creating new illustrations? Do you plan out the illustration ahead of time or do you just start drawing and let the experience guide you?
Admittedly, I jump into compositions more quickly than I should sometimes. I believe that as an artist, I’m crystalizing energy for other people to enjoy. If I’m having fun up front, then my audience will also have fun later. If my work is laborious, then my audience will also feel that lack of enthusiasm. So I try to move through the sketching process fairly quickly, relying on my intuition for what is fun.

What is your day job?
I work at a software company during the day. We make games that teach international kids English and I draw the pictures.

Has video game art, concept art, or fan art influenced you at all? 
All three of those things are a huge influence on me. I grew up copying the art out of video game instruction manuals. In college, I devoured the “Art of –” books that major Hollywood studios published and I currently surf Tumblr and deviantART for great commercial art, whether fan art or original.   

Are you an avid gamer? If so, what are you currently playing?
I used to play more games but now that I have a wife and two little girls, I’m lucky just to be able to make art. Admittedly, I have a hard time fitting gaming into my crazy schedule. But back in college and before I made much more time for games. 

If you could be any video game character who would it be?  Why?
I would be Samus, if I could still remain a Man-Samus. I just want to see what it’s like to have Chozo blood and run around in her mech suit. It would be so cool. On second thought, wandering alone through alien labyrinths might get kind of depressing. I wonder if her suit automatically dispenses Prozac?

What do you do for fun?
I draw. And I draw. And I draw. Oh, and I hang out with my little daughters. They’re hilarious.
